Harold Eugene Schaffner Sr.
September 23, 1925 - March 17, 2010
Harold Eugene Schaffner was born in Sidney, Ohio on September 23, 1925. Harold was the son of the late Delmar Schaffner and the late Bonny (Brown) Schaffner. He enlisted in the United States Army and served honorably from November 29, 1945 until May 29, 1947. While on leave he married the love of his life the former Lois Jean Todd in Kentucky February 19, 1946. Harold received the Good Conduct Medal, European Theatre Occupational Ribbon, and three Bronze Stars.
Harold worked for the Ford Motor Company, Woodhaven Stamping Plant as a Press Operator for twenty-three years. He retired in 1989.
Harold was a devoted member of the Raisinville Baptist Church. He had many varied interests including membership at Carleton VFW Post 4093, D.A.V., The American Legion, and United Auto Workers Local 387. Harold loved history, woodworking, and fishing, but none of these as much as his self proclaimed favorite membership Classic Car Club.
For more than six and a half years, Harold received care from his granddaughter, Lavina Durell. Recently, he moved to Fountain View of Monroe, and for the past five days Harold and his family had been under the care of Mercy Memorial Hospice.
On Wednesday, March 17, 2010, Harold Eugene Schaffner Sr. passed away at the age of 84. In addition to his parents his passing was preceded by his beloved wife Lois Jean on November 21, 2003, and a grandchild in infancy.
He leaves to cherish his memory four daughters: Sharon (Steve) Snider of New Knoxville, Ohio, Diana (Benjamin) Hawes of Newport, Michigan, Jean (James) Tuttle of Tecumseh, Michigan, and Deborah Wills of Taylor, Michigan; one son: Harold Schaffner Jr. of Monroe, Michigan; one brother: Leonard Schaffner of Sidney, Ohio; one sister: Virginia Valentine of Botkins, Ohio; fourteen grandchildren; and twenty-four great grandchildren.
Friends may gather from 1:00pm until 8:00pm, Sunday, March 21, 2010 at Merkle Funeral Service, 2442 North Monroe Street (734) 384-5185. A Celebration of His Life will take place at 11:00am, Monday, March 22, 2010 also at Merkle's with the Rev. Tony Lynn pastor of Raisinville Baptist Church officiating. Procession will follow to Roselawn Memorial Park in LaSalle for his final rest. Graveside services will be under the auspices of Monroe VFW Post 1138.
