Betty Jo Vinson was born in Covington, Georgia on August 25, 1940. She was one of six children born from the union of the late Albert Vinson and the late Edna (Pledger) Vinson. Betty moved to the Monroe Area from Georgia in 1960. She married Robert L. Hoskins on November 26, 1966, and the couple would raise a blended family. For more than thirty years Betty was employed by Ford Motor Company as a Payroll Clerk. She was a proud member of United Auto Workers Local 723 retiring in 2002. She valued community involvement and her faith. She was a longtime member of the Carey Chapel A.M.E. in Monroe and a past member of the Matrinettes at church. She was also a Life Member of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) and of the Orchard East Concerned Citizens. For many years she enjoyed bowling. Betty Jo Hoskins, age 75, of Monroe, Michigan passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, June 6, 2016. She had been under the care of ProMedica Monroe Hospice. In addition to her parents, and her husband on January 27, 2014 her passing was preceded by three brothers: James Vinson, Bobby Vinson, and Robert Vinson. To cherish her memory, Betty leaves three sons: Darin Hoskins and Davell Toles both of Monroe, and Rufus Smith of Georgia; one daughter: Sarita Toles of Monroe; one brother: Albert "J.C." (Mattie) Vinson Jr. of Georgia; one sister: Yvonne Reid of Georgia; many grandchildren and many great-grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews; special caregivers: Kerri Georgia, Marquita Cheatham, and Jamara Overstreet; four sisters-in-law: Lee (Lymon) Jett, Eristeen (Willie) Johnson, Wanda Montague, Bernice Bates; and brother-in-law: Freddy (Hilda) Hoskins. Friends may gather from 4:00pm until 8:00pm on Friday, June 10, 2016 at Merkle Funeral Service; South Monroe, 14567 South Dixie Hwy, (734) 241-7070. A Homegoing Celebration of Her Life will take place at 11:00am on Saturday, June 11, 2016. Reverend Heather Boone pastor of Oaks of Righteousness Church will officiate. Procession will follow to Roselawn Memorial Park in LaSalle, Michigan for burial. A luncheon will follow at the Arthur Lesow Community Center 120 Eastchester Street Monroe, Michigan. Memorials for those who desire are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
