Gary W. Guy age 62, of Carleton passed away at 6:32pm, Wednesday, August 19, 2009 at the Emergency Room of Mercy Memorial Hospital. Gary was born March 31, 1947 in Middlesboro, Kentucky from the union of Homer Guy and Corrine (Fortner) Guy. He was baptized and confirmed by Father Richard at St. Patrick's Church in Carleton. He attended Monroe Schools and graduated from Monroe High School with the Class of 1967. Gary enlisted in the United States Navy and served honorably during the Vietnam Conflict. He married Lona Kernyo in Monroe on April 3, 1971. Gary worked as a Heavy Equipment Operator and Mill Operator for more than 35 years for Holcim Company formerly Dundee Cement. He had also been employed as a laborer for Silica. He took a medical retirement in 2005. Gary enjoyed raising rabbits although his kind heart led to them mostly being pets and not dinner. He enjoyed model railroading, hunting and fishing. He loved the time spent time with his children and his grandchildren who affectionately called him PAPA. He had attended the First Church of God. Gary was an avid baseball fan and a die-hard Cub and Tiger fan. He had a sweet spot for candy and especially for Starlight Mints. He is survived by his wife: Lona of Carleton; a son: Gary S. (Lashawn) Guy of Carleton; a daughter: Deana (Jeff) Geierman of Monroe; a sister: Sharon (Rev. Sam) McCormick of Monroe; three grandchildren: Matthew Burns, Adrianna Guy, and Journey Guy; five nephews; three nieces; and two beloved fuzzy babies: Muffin and Maggie. Friends may gather from 12:00pm until 8:00pm Saturday, August 22, and Sunday, August 23, at Merkle Funeral Service, 2442 North Monroe Street (734) 384-5185. Gary will lie-in-state from 10:00am until A Celebration of His Life at 11:00am, Monday, August 24, 2009 at the First Church of God, 2121 South Custer Road, Monroe. His friend the Rev. Lawrence Detruf pastor of the church and brother-in-law the Rev. Sam McCormick Associate Pastor of Monroe Outreach Assembly of God will co-officiate. Procession will follow to Roselawn in LaSalle for the final committal service which will be under the auspices of Monroe Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1138. Cremation will follow at the Roselawn Crematory. Memorials are suggested to the wishes of the family.
