Wayne C. Gibson was born on April 9, 1941 in Middlesboro, Kentucky. He was the son of Vernon and Helen (Webb) Gibson. While Wayne was young the Gibson family moved to Monroe for their father to find work. Once arriving in Monroe, he attended Asam School on Toben Road. Wayne then continued his studies at Monroe High School where he was in the class of 1961. Wayne enlisted in the United States Army in September of 1961 and served honorably during Vietnam. He received medals for Marksmanship, Sharpshooting, and Good Conduct, and obtained the rank of E-4. He was discharged in 1964. On April 22, 1967 Wayne was married to former Janet Laney in Monroe, Michigan. Together they would share more than forty years of marriage. Wayne worked seven years for General Motors before taking employment with the Laborer's Local 465. As a laborer he worked in the construction industry on such jobs as the Enrico Fermi Nuclear Power Plant before retiring in 1994. Wayne had many varied interests. He enjoyed hunting deer, rabbit, and squirrel. He also spent quality time with Janet while hunting pheasant. Wayne had taken "Big Hunt" trips Out West and often spoke of the particular enjoyment he had received from these jaunts. He acquired guns over the years which had formed quite a collection. Wayne was an avid fisherman, and especially enjoyed the Perch on Lake Erie. He also loved to bowl and play cards. Wayne C. Gibson, age 67 passed into the arms of his Lord, on Saturday, January 24, 2009. Wayne's passing was preceded by his father and a brother: Carl Gibson. Wayne's memory is cherished by his wife: Janet; his mother: Helen both of Monroe; three brothers: Don (Annie) of Columbia, SC, David (Sue) and Eric (Diana) both of Monroe; four nieces; four nephews; and many great nieces and nephews. Friends may gather from 12-8pm, Monday, January 26, 2009 at Merkle Funeral Service, 2442 North Monroe Street, (734) 384-5185 where a Celebration of His Life will be held at 11:00am, Tuesday with the Rev. Heath Hunter of the North Monroe Street Church of God and the Rev. Harold Raines of Monroe Full Gospel co-officiating. Burial will follow at Woodland Cemetery.
