Joanne Elizabeth Thompson was born in Ecorse on April 27, 1937. She was one of three children born from the union of the late Aloysius Everett and Helen D. (Greenleaf) Navarre. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Alfred Church in Taylor and attended Eurekadale School in Taylor.
She married Gomer Massie and from this union would come the birth of three children. In addition to being a homemaker and looking after her family's needs, Joanne worked outside the home for eighteen years as a bus driver for Jefferson Schools. She was a past member of the Swan Creek Boat Club.
When Joanne and Gomer separated she moved to Comins, Michigan and purchased the Knot Hole Bar operating the entity for eighteen years. Joanne was a social butterfly and loved conversation in the company of family and friends. Her hobbies included bingo, crossword puzzles and playing cards with her friends and family. Her children and grandchildren meant the world to her and cherished her time spent with them.
She married the late James Thompson on June 21, 2002 in Flat Rock. An avid Detroit Tiger fan, she never missed a game. This past May she was a team guest of honor meeting the players and getting a kiss from Cabrera. She was a member of the Huron Valley Eagles in Flat Rock.
Joanne E. Thompson age 78 of Monroe formerly of Newport, Comins, and Flat Rock passed away at 12:56pm, Saturday, June 6, 2015 at Magnumcare of Monroe. She had been under the care of Mercy Memorial Hospice. In addition to her parents and husband: James on November 5, 2005, her passing was preceded by a brother: William Navarre; and two grandchildren: Melissa (Sonoras) Lawson and Craig Weinstein.
To cherish her memory she leaves three children: John "Skip" (Terry) Massie of Stuart, Florida, Sharon Weinstein (Danny Carr), and Cindy (John) Sonoras both of Newport; a sister: Jeanne Popejoy (Ralph Zorro) of Cheboygan; five grandchildren: Angela (Aaron) Parker, Holly Weinstein, Eric Weinstein, Michael Massie, Jodi (Eric) Schreiber, a granddaughter-in-law: Alicia Weinstein; and fifteen great grandchildren.
Family and Friends will gather from 9:00am until 1:00pm on Saturday, June 13, 2015 at Merkle Funeral Service; 2442 North Monroe Street (734) 384-5185. A Celebration of Her Life will follow at 1:00pm also at Merkle's with Pastor Roy Southerland officiating.
