Bernard Maurer Jr. was born in Monroe on June 30, 1938. He was the oldest child born from the union of Bernard H. and Rose (Roeder) Maurer Sr. Bernie attended St. John the Baptist where he was baptized and confirmed. He graduated from Monroe Catholic Central High School with the Class of 1956. Bernie began his career with the Monroe Evening News performing home deliveries. He became a full time employee upon graduation working as a Line of Type Operator. In the latter part of his career Bernie served the company in ad sales. Bernie retired on June 29, 2000 after forty-seven years of total service. Bernie married the former Suzanne M. McBride and from this union would come the birth of four children. On December 31, 1984 he married the former Tina Blanchett in Monroe. Bernie always stayed busy. He worked for Joe Hale performing asphalt work and had partnered to fix up homes to be sold on several occasions. He was athletic staying physically fit with weight lifting, playing softball, and bowling at Nortel Lanes. Bernie was also an avid hunter sharing his passion with his boys. He had a passion for classic cars and motorcycles, being extremely particular in the way that he cared for his own vehicles. He was a member of the Good Time Cruisers, Gold Wing Road Riders Association, Monroe Area Street Rod Association, and Placers Car Club. Bernie was a past City of Monroe Police Reservist and a member of the Monroe Moose Lodge 884. For the past eight years he had enjoyed vacationing in Eustis, Florida and had wintered there the past three years. Bernie age 76 of Monroe passed away at 3:20pm, Thursday, May 28, 2015 at the St. Vincent Mercy Heart and Vascular Center. In addition to his father in 1989 and his mother in 2000 his passing was preceded by a grandson: Drew Maurer; a niece: Erin Haynes; a nephew: Carl Burkey Jr.; and a brother-in-law: Harold Rowe. To cherish his memory he leaves his beloved wife of thirty years: Tina Maurer of Monroe, four children: Bernard H. (Karla) Maurer of Monroe, Robert J. (Cindy Smith) Maurer of Monroe, Steven (Christine) Maurer of Troy, and Annette M. Maurer of Monroe; brother: Ronald (Laura) Maurer of Frankenmuth; two sisters: Mary Lou Eckman of Walbridge, Ohio and Donna (Carl) Burkey of Monroe; ten grandchildren: B.J., Mandi Maurer (Michael Canupp), Jacob, Chloe, Ashley Wells, Aaron, Travis, Mathew, Gracie, and Colin; and nine great grandchildren with one on the way. Friends may gather from 2:00pm until 8:00pm on Monday, June 1, 2015 at Merkle Funeral Service, North Monroe. Because of Bernie's love for automobiles, the Maurer Family is requesting a classic car show in his honor on Monday afternoon. A Celebration of His Life will take place at 11:00am on Tuesday, June 2, 2015 also at Merkle's with Reverend Von Loop officiating. Procession will follow to St. Joseph Cemetery in Monroe for entombment. Memorials for those who desire are suggested to Relay for Life.
