Autry Levon Bailey Sr.
September 24, 1936 - May 18, 2015
Autry Levon Bailey was born in Grove Oak, Alabama on September 24, 1936. He was one of two children born from the union of the late Jeff L. Bailey and the late Velma (Brown) Bailey. Autry attended Airport High Schools.
Autry married love of his life Alice Scott on December 18, 1954 at the Rectory of Monroe First Baptist Church in Monroe. He supported his family as a Supervisor for over forty years at McLouth Steel in Gibraltar. Autry loved the Lord and received his spiritual nourishment at Monroe Missionary Baptist Church and as a Member of the Masons.
Autry was an exceptionally strong willed man who spoke his mind and was well respected by others. He enjoyed time spent with his family, as a devoted father, grandfather and great grandfather. Autry was a talented woodcarver and appreciated the outdoors in his vegetable garden and planting trees.
In his free time, Autry enjoyed reading his favorite books and magazines about the Old West and the Civil War era. During football season, Autry could be found watching his favorite team, The Crimson Tides yelling "Roll, Tide, Roll."
Autry Levon Bailey Sr., age 78 of Newport passed away at 12:56pm on Monday, May 18, 2015 at Oakwood Hospital- Southshore in Trenton. In addition to his parents his passing was preceded by his brother: Marlon "Elmo" Bailey.
To cherish his memory, Autry leaves his loving wife: Alice Bailey; five children: Autry "Levon" (Sherri) Bailey, David Bailey, Sherrie (Donny) Toro, Belinda Petit and Cormick (Debbie) Bailey; eleven grandchildren: Tracy (Brian) McCalla, Ashley (Chris) Semesky, Megan (Spencer) Bailey, Jarid Bailey, Donald II(Jenn) Torro, Alicia Toro, Patrick ( Mary ) Petit, Brianne (Ryan ) Ort, Veronica Petit, Nicholas Bailey, and Jazlynn Bailey; nineteen great- grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews; and his canine companion, Susie Shay.
Memorial donations are suggested to the Monroe Missionary Baptist Church General Fund. Friends may gather from 2:00pm until 8:00pm on Thursday, May 21, 2015 at Merkle Funeral Service, North Monroe. A Masonic service will be held at 7:30pm also at Merkle's on Thursday, May 21, 2015. He will lie in state from 9:00am until a Celebration of His life at 10:00am on Friday, May 22, 2015 at Monroe Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Roy Sutherland officiating.
