Obituary of Sherman McNeal Carey

Sherman McNeal Carey was born on May 17, 1948, in Monroe, Michigan.  He was the only child born to the union of the late Charles Raymond Carey and Virginia Agnes (Hatfield) Carey.  He was a 1966 graduate of Monroe High School and earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Western Michigan University, where he played football, baseball and was a member of the Delta Chi Fraternity. He earned his MBA from the University of Michigan.

Sherman married Treva Jean Loope on October 13, 1973.  He provided for the needs of his family with employment at Prystup Packaging Corporation for many years, retiring as a national accounts manager. 

Sherman held dual membership with Lincoln Masonic Lodge #137 and Monroe Lodge #27. He was a member of the Scottish Rite, Oasis Temple, and Order of the Eastern Star #114.

Sherman was an avid antique car enthusiast. He enjoyed restoring, touring, and collecting antique automobiles. He was a member of the NC Region AACA, Carolina Crossroads Chevrolet Region, and the Floral City Model A Club. He also served as a National Director and Master Judge for the Antique Automobile Club of America.

In the community, he was a coach for West Lincoln Optimist youth baseball, and the Rotary Rams football programs. He was also a Booster of the Lincolnton High School Band & Athletics. Sherman was a charter member of the Lincoln Sunrise Rotary Club, and a member of the American Legion.  He was a member of First Baptist Church, where he was head usher for 25 years, and served in various leadership roles.

Sherman McNeal Carey, age 75, of Lincolnton, North Carolina formerly of Monroe, Michigan passed away unexpectedly on Saturday; September 30, 2023, at Atrium Health Lincoln Hospital. 

To cherish his memory he leaves his loving wife of fifty years: Treva Jean (Loope) Carey of Lincolnton; two sons: Bryce R. Carey of Lincolnton and Brett C. Carey (Chyrise) of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; two granddaughters: Maecyn Carey-Williams and Briana Kanpp; four brothers-in-law: John Loope (Mary Ann), Ron Loope (Claudia), Bud Loope, and Gary Loope; three sisters-in-law: Sonya “Sis” Keehn, Kim Weaver (Beth), and Lisa Michaud; and numerous cousins.

Friends may gather from 4:00pm until 6:00pm on Tuesday; October 3, 2023, at Warlick Funeral Home; 125 Dave Warlick Drive; Lincolnton, North Carolina 28092.  Funeral Services will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday; October 4, 2023, at the First Baptist Church; 201 Robin Road, Lincolnton, North Carolina 28092 with Dr. Stanley Spence officiating.  Friends may also gather from 12:00pm until 2:00pm on Friday; October 6, 2023, at Merkle Funeral Service, South Monroe; 14567 South Dixie Highway, Monroe, Michigan 48161 (734) 241-7070.  A Masonic Service will take place at Merkle’s at 2:00pm followed by a Celebration of His Life officiated by Pastor Roy Southerland.  A Procession will then lead to Roselawn Memorial Park in LaSalle where entombment will take place in the Chapel of Prayer Mausoleum.
