Obituary of Evelyn Frances Wieger

Evelyn Frances Wieger, 106, slipped gently into God’s Arms on February 20, 2018 after a long life of serving him. Born December 11, 1911 in Montrose, South Dakota to Neils and Phebe Sorenson. They moved to Omaha, Nebraska where she shared life with her siblings Vivian, Neils, Phebe May and Jack. On June 5, 1932 she married Ervin D. Bender. They resided in Omaha before moving to Hastings, Nebraska. They worked at the Naval Base. During World War II, Evelyn enlisted in the Women’s Corp, serving at Fitzimens Hospital in Denver, Colorado as a medical transport Clerk. She was honorably discharged, returned to work at the naval base until 1957 when the base closed. She and Ervin decided to go to Colorado Springs, Colorado to work at the United States Air Force Academy. Both retired after 30 year with US Civil Service. Ervin died in 1979 after 47 years of marriage. Evelyn volunteered with the Pink Ladies at Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs. She was active in the First Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School, served as President of the ladies Rocky Mountain Synod and Dorain Ladies Circle. She enjoyed sewing, ceramics, painting, knitting and any type of crafts. In November 1983 she married Gilbert Wieger. They enjoyed travelling and spending winters in Arizona. Gilbert passed in April 1992. Shortly after his passing, Evelyn moved to Michigan for the past 26 years. Survivors include her daughter Elaine (Robert L.) White, 3 grandchildren Julie R. (Charlie) Lee, Robert S. White and Alexis M. (Andrew) Burnham; 6 great-grandchildren Typhany, Taylor, Tiara, Zachary, Henry White and Allie Burnham. Evelyn will be entombed at Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Cover Funeral Home in Dundee (734-529-3156) is handling local arrangements. No services will be held in Michigan.
