Obituary of Michael Derigo

Michael William Derigo was born on July 21, 1946 in Decatur, Illinois. He is one of three children born from the union of the late William Henry Derigo and the late Mary Elizabeth Stairwalt. After graduating from high school, he proudly enlisted into the United States Army. Michael honorably served his country from January 27, 1964 until January 25, 1967, earning several commendations including a purple heart. After serving in the military, he furthered his education at Perdue University with a focus on law.

Michael started his career as a plumber/pipefitter to care for his family. A proud union man, he worked for Local 190, Ann Arbor in construction for many years before taking medical retirement in 1993. He wanted nothing more than to make sure his family was well taken care of. A natural family man, he loved nothing more than to spend time with his children and cook for gatherings. He was always goofing around and making those around him smile.

After retiring, Michael was driven to help the needy within his community. He opened a soup kitchen in Monroe called “The Mission” where he served meals twice a week. He was a generous and loving man. Friends often referred to him as the “Minnesota Mike”.
