Leland Thomas Gill was born in Monroe, Michigan on December 13, 1957. Lee was the middle of five children born to Bernard and Theresa (Masta) Gill. He graduated from Jefferson High School in Newport, Michigan with the Class of 1976. Lee was self-employed as a heavy equipment operator and carpenter for much of his life. His woodworking skills were inherited from a long line of carpenters in the Gill family, including his father and grandfather. Lee used his talent to build his mother a cedar chest while still in high school. He also worked for Slocum Tree Service for a short time until medically retiring in 1993.

Lee lived and worked alongside his brother, Dave, in California from 1979 to 1984. After moving back to his home state of Michigan, he was reacquainted with Judy (Pug) Lynch who was love of his life. The couple made their home in Bitely, Michigan for twenty-six years. Lee loved fishing in the area. An incredible cook, he often fried up his catch alongside his cousin, Al. As a younger man, he also enjoyed shooting pool.

Lee was extremely intelligent and always open to learning something new. He frequently tuned into National Geographic, Discovery, and The History Channel. Lee also inherited his mother’s artistic talent. He was skilled at drawing and once built an elaborately detailed model of a cabin out of matchsticks. Although he was a quiet and private person, his good nature and loving heart was evident to all.
