Dale was an outstanding teacher, mentor, and colleague.
He was also a fun guy: one of my favorite stories is when he and a couple of other newcomers set out to explore Qatar. I always warned people that if they took a wrong turn, they could end up in Saudi Arabia; he literally did. They got out of Qatar, but not into Saudi, and when they returned the Qataris wouldn't let them in without a Saudi exit stamp in their passport.
Dale told the story, laughed, and went on enjoying Qatar and enjoying life.
We all have such good memories of his time with us - Peace.

I'd drop by Dale's office at the end of many a long day. He'd shut down his computer and, with that smile, gently close the door and begin to sympathize with me. I came away amazed at his profound insights and always charmed by his blazing wit.
Dale was an inspiration to anyone who has ever stood in front of a class.

My wife & I are glad to say that we were friends with Dale. We enjoyed restaurants in Doha with him including Turkey Central, and especially one drive out into the desert in which we nearly got very lost, and almost accidentally got in trouble at the Qatar/Saudi border. We photographed Dale as he happily rode his first camel -- much to the amusement of everyone on the beach that day. Dale was an honest, fun & funny, good-natured, no-nonsense guy, a progressive thinker, and someone who gave us hope for the future. We are terribly saddened at his premature loss.

I still can't quite accept the fact that Dale isn't just taking a break from Qatar and holidaying in Michigan. That was exactly the fun loving, incredibly humorous personality that he was. A charming character and truly a great human being. Within a semester he had become my favorite professor without even officially teaching me a course. He made me feel special in a way that I am not skillful enough to describe. In fact I felt like I was his favorite, but now in hindsight I realize that he was such a person that he made everyone feel that way about him. It pains me deeply that I won't be lucky enough to see his cheery face around the place and I feel truly cheated of an inspirational friend. I guess God does indeed extract the best souls from earth to join him in heaven.

Professor Dale Winters was an outstanding professor, amazing mentor and a great friend. His passion for his students and his love for teaching was unparalleled. He was open and warm to all of his students and through the one and a half years of attending his classes he has always made me laugh. He made a true impact on me and everyone around him. He made Carnegie Mellon feel like home.
We were his family. I feel honored and privileged to have known him. He was a true role model for me and others. May you rest in peace. ?

Prof. Winter was a great friend and professor. Although I had not take any courses with him, I frequently discussed cricket and other sports with him as he knew a lot of sport. I really miss his daily cheerful "good morning Abhay!", that would enlighten my day.
I'm happy to have met you Prof. Dale.

What a smart and funny man Dale was! I was honored to have been able to work closely with him for the last semester here in the ARC at Carnegie Mellon-Qatar. He truly loved teaching and working with students, and the impact he made on those fortunate enough to have had him as an instructor was profound. I will deeply miss his generous spirit and quirky sense of humor!
