Obituary of Gerald "Jerry" Alan Joyce

Gerald “Jerry” Alan Joyce was born on January 16, 1959 in Monroe, Michigan.   He was the son of the late Kenneth Joyce and the late Mary Lou (Schassberger) Joyce.   Gerald attended Lincoln School and the Hawthorne Center before graduating from Monroe Public Schools.  

For many years, Gerald worked in the restaurant business as a dishwasher and prep cook.   He was employed by several local establishments over the years including Delaney’s (Holiday Inn), Duff’s, Cracker Barrel, Big Boy, Boron Truck Stop and Goodwill Industries.  

Jerry loved music and he could often be found listening to the likes of Elvis or Led Zeppelin.   He also enjoyed playing the drums.   Jerry could often be found tinkering on things.   He liked to ride his bike.  

Jerry was known for being quite stubborn, but more importantly he was a “Gentle Giant” blessed with a heart of gold.   He was always willing to lend a hand to someone in need, often volunteering his time at the Gods Works Dinner at St. Mary Parish Life Center. 

Gerald Alan Joyce, age 59, of Monroe, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, September 18, 2018 at his home.   In addition to his parents his passing was preceded by a sister:  Linda Christine Joyce, and beloved grandparents:  Ralph and Elizabeth Zieske.

To cherish his memory, Jerry leaves six siblings:  Barbara (Charles) McMullen of LaSalle; William (Dawn) Joyce of LaSalle, Mary Lynne (Robert) Pinchoff of Monroe, Judy Louise Greiner of Monroe, Charles (Carrie) Joyce of Erie, and Laurice Deon Joyce of Monroe; several nieces and nephews:  Ryan (Michelle) McMullen, Nicole McMullen (Robert Rangel), Eric (Melissa) Joyce, Mason Pfund, Rachel Greiner, Danielle Greiner, Justin Smith, Kortney Smith, Rickie Smith and Devin Smith, as well as numerous great nieces and nephews.

Friends may gather from 4:00pm until 7:00pm on Monday, September 24, 2018 at Merkle Funeral Service, South Monroe; 14567 South Dixie Highway (734) 241-7070.   A Celebration of His Life will take place at 7:00pm also at Merkle’s with Reverend Philip Wylie pastor of First Freewill Missionary Baptist Church officiating.  Private inurnment will take place at Gethsemane Cemetery.
