Caroyl Duke (Griffin) Dunlap
January 18, 1924 - January 15, 2011
Caroyl D. (Griffin) Dunlap age 86 of Monroe, passed away at 1:22pm, Saturday afternoon, January 15, 2011 at Mercy Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Sandusky, Ohio on January 18, 1924 the daughter of the late William Hess and the late Clara (Duke) Hess. She graduated from Baldwin Wallace College in Berea, Ohio. She married Owen D. Griffin on October 23, 1948, and moved to Monroe at that time. Owen passed away of Lymphoma on May 4, 1983.
On December 26, 1996, she married Bucyrus (OH) High School classmate James Dunlap, and moved to Sarasota, Florida. In August of 2008 she moved back to Monroe where she was a resident at the Alice Lorraine Care Center until her passing.
Caroyl was a teacher at South Monroe Elementary School for 24 years, retiring in 1986. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, and volunteered many years of service to community service organizations including the Golfcrest Garden Club, the General Federation of Women's Clubs, the Hospital Guild, the Sawyer House, and the Monroe Thrift Shop.
She is survived by her husband: James Dunlap of Sarasota, Florida; four sons: Gary (Teri) Griffin of Monroe, Alan (Barb) Griffin of Canton, Georgia, Steve (Donna) Griffin of Middletown, Ohio, and William (Ann) Griffin of Lambertville, Michigan; nine grandchildren: Kelly, Jeremy (Sara), Kristen, Josh, Christopher, Matthew, Nicholas, Ashley, and Melanie; and one great grandchild: Landon.
In accordance with her wishes, there will be no public visitation or services. A private family celebration of her life will held at a later date. Her cremated remains will be buried next to her first husband Owen at Roselawn Memorial Park in LaSalle. Merkle Funeral Service, 2442 North Monroe Street (734) 384-5185 was entrusted with her arrangements.
