Von L. Loop was born in Monroe on August 11, 1937. He was one of three children born from the union of the late Lester Loop and the late Ola (Welch) Loop. Von was a 1955 graduate of Monroe High School, and later of The American Press Institute in Reston, Virginia.
Von married the love of his life the former, Charlene Cupp of Tazewell, Tennessee on June 15, 1957. They were married by the Reverend E.E. Patterson at Monroe Missionary Baptist Church.
For more than thirty-seven years, Von was employed by the Monroe Evening News. He worked as the Retail Advertising Manager, Credit Manager, and Co-Op Advertising Manager before his retirement.
For many years, Von served his Lord as Pastor of Frenchtown Missionary Baptist Church, Evergreen Acres Missionary Baptist Church, and Associate Pastor at Monroe Missionary Baptist Church. Currently, he was a member of Liberty Missionary Baptist Church. He had sang and played guitar with the Sounds of Gospel group.
He was a 32nd degree Mason with the Monroe Lodge 27, Free & Accepted Masons for which he served as a past secretary. In 2001 he was elected Mason of the Year. Von was blessed with a great sense of humor, was very outgoing and always willing to lend a helping hand. Von also was an avid golfer.
Von L. Loop, age 78, of St. Augustine, Florida passed away at 11:26pm, Saturday, November 28, 2015 at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. He was surrounded by his loving family. His passing was preceded by his parents.
To cherish his memory, Von leaves his beloved wife Charlene of fifty-eight years; one daughter Vonda (Mike) Ternes of St. Augustine, Florida; one sister: Shirley Russell of Monroe; one brother Dariel Loop of Monroe; and two grandchildren: Jace Ternes of St. Augustine, FL and Cari Ternes of Kettering, Ohio.
Memorial Donations are suggested to the American Heart Association. Friends may gather from 4:00pm until 8:00pm on Wednesday, December 2, 2015 at Merkle Funeral Service, 2442 North Monroe Street (734) 384-5185. A Celebration of His Life will take place at 11:00am on Thursday December 3, 2015 also at Merkle's with Pastor Bob Baltrip and Reverend Roger Cosby of Liberty Missionary Baptist Church co-officiating. Procession will follow to Roselawn for burial.
