Obituary of Jon Winter Wandt

Jon Winter Wandt was born in Monroe, Michigan on May 23, 1938.  He was the son of Carl Wandt and Dorothy (Winter) Wandt.  He attended Monroe Public Schools, graduating from Monroe High School with the Class of 1956.

Jon was married to the love of his life, Betty Jean Wyreman by Reverend Hitchens on January 10, 1959 at the Evangelical Brethern Church on the corner of Yargerville and Strasburg Roads.  They made their home at 3547 Yargerville Road for thirteen years.   They then moved to North Otter Creek where he lived the rest of his life.  

Jon was hired into Ford Motor Company, Monroe Stamping Plant on October 22, 1958 as a laborer.  He then went through an Apprenticeship Program with the company to become a Machine Repairman, graduating in October of 1966.  Jon worked for forty-two years at that location.  He was a member of their Fire Rescue Team until his retirement on December 31, 1999.  Jon served his community as a member of the LaSalle Township Volunteer Fire Department for twenty-four years.  He served in various capacities including Chief for six years.  He was a past Treasurer and President of the Monroe County Firefighters Association. 

Jon loved hunting and fishing.  Later in life he was known to be kind of handy with a piece of wood.

Jon was preceded in death by his parents; a sister:  Ruth Johnson; his beloved wife: Betty; three children: Paul, Denise, and Ann Marie Wandt; and grandson: Nathan Huag.  To cherish his memory he leaves three sons: Harold, Dean, and Glen Wandt (Christine Krug); one daughter: Bonnie LaBerge; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may gather from 2:00pm until 8:00pm on Monday; April 17, 2023 at Merkle Funeral Service, South Monroe; 14567 South Dixie Highway, Monroe, Michigan 48161 (734) 241-7070.   A Ceremonial Walk-Through of emergency workers will take place at 7:00pm.  A Celebration of His Life will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday; April 18, 2023 also at Merkle’s with Pastor Roy Southerland of Lambertville Community Church officiating.   Procession will follow to Roselawn Memorial Park in LaSalle for burial. 

Memorials for those who desire are suggested to St. Jude’s Childrens Research Hospital.  Online guests may leave words of inspiration and comfort or share a photo by visiting www.merklefs.com.
