He spent most of his childhood growing up in Monroe, Michigan except when he lived in Anchorage, Alaska. While there he spent several years as an avid fisherman and hunter, and assisted in rescue efforts after the 1964 Good Friday earthquake.   Dick attended Catholic Central High School in Monroe, Michigan, and he had his first job at Danny’s Fine Foods where he also continued to shop at for many years. Dick was a fabulous storyteller and had a great sense of humor. He never met a stranger and was adept at engaging any person he met in a good conversation.

Dick was an avid golfer who enjoyed hitting the links at River Raisin Golf Course where he would also work as a ranger before and after his retirement. He loved the outdoors spending time gardening and attending to his tomatoes and clematis plants or enjoying the frogs and koi fish in his backyard pond. He also received recognition in the Monroe Evening News for gardening.  Dick loved food and loved to cook Italian dishes and what made all his dishes delicious was the secret family recipe that went into each dish. Dick, along with his wife and daughter enjoyed snow birding with an RV for several years after his retirement.
