Obituary of Dorothy Stough

Dorothy Schmidt was born on August 12, 1928, in Detroit, Michigan.  She was the only daughter of four children born to the union of John A. Schmidt and Almedia B. (Plumb) Schmidt.  She attended Dundee High School graduating with the Class of 1946. 

Dorothy married the love of her life Norman "Bud" Stough on February 1, 1947.   The couple were blessed with a daughter and a son of their own.   She cared for the needs of her husband and children as a homemaker.   Dorothy didn’t make time for other activities, lamenting that her children were her hobby.   After raising her own children, Dale had graduated and Michael was in high school, she sought employment outside the home taking a position as a Teacher’s Aide for Dundee Community Schools.   For more than ten years she relished in her role, enjoying the opportunity to help students learn.

Dorothy was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Dundee.   She and Bud spent twenty-two years wintering in Florida.   They played cards, mostly euchre, with a few other couples they had met.   They also attended dances in the hall of their complex, especially enjoying the annual New Years’ Eve bash.

Dorothy made her home on Middle Lake (the BEST lake in her humble opinion) in Irish Hills for thirty-five years.   She loved watching the lake life, although it wasn’t overly busy, most of all she appreciated the peace and quiet.   Each year Dorothy and Norman worked in the yard as she planted flowers, and he maintained a garden.

Dorothy Stough, age 94, of Dundee, Michigan passed away peacefully at 4:50am on Monday; February 6, 2023, at Hampton Manor of Dundee.   Her passing was preceded by her parents; a son: Michael Stough; a grandson: Michael Stough; and three brothers: Joseph Plumb, Edward Plumb, and Harold Schmidt.

To cherish her memory, she leaves a beloved husband of seventy-six years of marriage:  Norman "Bud" Stough of Dundee; a daughter:  Dale (Dwight) Mason; a daughter in law: Julie Stough; five grandchildren:  Christopher (Allison) Mason, Gregory (Jessica) Mason, Eric (Stacy) Mason, Nichole Stough, Jennifer (Mark) Hammerschmidt; twelve great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.  

Friends may gather from 2:00pm until 5:00pm on Sunday; February 12, 2023, at Merkle Funeral Service, Dundee; 297 Tecumseh Street, Dundee, Michigan 48131 (734) 529-3156.   She will lie in state from 10:00am until 11:00am on Monday; February 13, 2023, at St. John Lutheran Church, 460 Riley Street, Dundee.   A Funeral Service Celebrating Her Life will take place at 11:00am with Pastor Janice Locke officiating.  Cremation will follow through the on-site crematory, Covenant Cremation of Erie, Michigan.
