Obituary of Darwood Arthur Knab

Darwood Arthur Knab was born in LaSalle on May 17, 1920. He was one of four children born from the union of the late Harry Knab and the late Ida (Wagner) Knab. He was baptized, educated, and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church. He graduated from Monroe High School with the Class of 1939; serving as Captain of the football team in 38 and 39, and being an outstanding swimmer and track runner setting records in both. He was married to the love of his life, the former Marie Bernhard, by Pastor Fehner at Trinity on April 10, 1943. Pete worked on the family farm for many years and supplemented his income as a Lumberjack during the winters for La-Z-Boy. He began a career with Monroe Public Schools as a Warehouse Superintendent, overseeing supplies for all of the school buildings. He worked for thirty-four years, serving as a bus driver for five of those years, retiring in 1984. Pete enjoyed camping and traveling. He maintained a garden sharing his corn with everyone and eighty fruit trees. He kept his home warm by chopping firewood. Pete was an avid baseball and hockey fan, and he loved to ice fish on Lake Erie. He served as money counter at Trinity for twenty-five years, and served as the LaSalle Township Clerk for seventeen years. He will be remembered for his kindness and generosity. Pete, age 96 of LaSalle passed away Saturday, August 27, 2016 at Wellspring Lutheran Services after a brief illness. In addition to his parents his passing was preceded by his brother: Lester and a sister: Marguerite Cowan. To cherish his memory he leaves a bride of seventy-three years: Marie of LaSalle; a son: Dale (Andrea) Knab of Ann Arbor; two grandchildren: Jeffrey Knab of Texas and Heidi Knab of Ann Arbor; one great granddaughter: Isa Knab of Texas; brother: Donald Knab of LaSalle; and his beloved feline companion: Bella. Friends may gather from 3:00-8:00pm on Tuesday, August 30, 2016 at Merkle Funeral Service, 2442 North Monroe (734) 384-5185. He will lie in state from 10:00am until a funeral service at 11:00am at Trinity Lutheran Church, 323 Scott Street on Wednesday, August 31. Burial will take place at Roselawn at a later date. Memorials in lieu of flowers are suggested to Trinity Lutheran Church.
